Xanthippus

Xanthippus, the son of Ariphron and father of Pericles, succeeded Themistocles as commander of the Athenian fleet in B.C. 479. He commanded the Athenians at the decisive battle of Mycalé (south of Ionia in Asia Minor, north of the mouth of the Maeander, and opposite the island of Samos), a great victory by the Greeks over the Persian fleet on the same day as the battle of Plataea, B.C. 479.
